Chapter # 5 – Economic Planning and Development in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
5.2.4 List the Millennium Developmental Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) Signed by Pakistan.
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a set of eight international development goals established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000. They were aimed at addressing key global challenges such as poverty, hunger, disease, gender inequality, and environmental degradation by the target year of 2015. The MDGs served as a framework for international cooperation and efforts to improve the living conditions of people around the world. The eight MDGs were:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, succeeded the MDGs and were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Building on the achievements and lessons learned from the MDGs, the SDGs are a broader and more ambitious set of 17 goals designed to address a wide range of economic, social, and environmental challenges facing the world today. The SDGs aim to achieve sustainable development by 2030 by addressing issues such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. The 17 SDGs cover areas such as ending poverty and hunger, ensuring good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, peace, justice, and strong institutions, and partnerships for the goals.
