Chapter # 5 – Economic Planning and Development in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
5.4.2 Discuss different Problems Faced by the Health Sector in Pakistan.
The healthcare sector in Pakistan faces a multitude of challenges, reflecting systemic issues that have hindered its effectiveness despite some progress in recent years. These challenges encompass various aspects, including resource scarcity, poor infrastructure, widespread corruption, inadequate healthcare education, lack of public health insurance, high prices of imported products, and low levels of health awareness, particularly in rural areas.
- Lack of Resources: Insufficient infrastructure at Basic Health Units (BHUs) and Rural Health Centers (RHCs) results in reluctance among people to utilize public healthcare services. This leads to overcrowding at tertiary care facilities, compounded by limited access due to distance and transportation issues.
- Poor Infrastructure: Government hospitals often lack essential resources such as doctors, nurses, beds, medicines, and utilities like water and power. This results in overcrowding, unhygienic conditions, and compromised patient care.
- Corruption: Corruption at political and administrative levels further exacerbates resource shortages and undermines trust in the healthcare system, leading to inefficiencies and mismanagement.
- Lack of Educated Health Specialists: Despite the graduation of numerous students each year, there remains a shortage of educated and skilled healthcare professionals. Limited opportunities in the public sector and migration of specialists abroad contribute to this challenge.
- Lack of Public Health Insurance: The absence of comprehensive public health insurance forces many people to seek expensive treatment from private healthcare providers, exacerbating financial burdens on patients.
- High Prices of Imported Products: Dependency on imported medicines and medical equipment escalates healthcare costs, straining the already limited resources of the healthcare sector.
- Lack of Awareness: Rural populations, in particular, lack awareness about preventive measures, treatment options, and health-related issues, placing additional pressure on the healthcare system.
To address these challenges and improve the healthcare sector in Pakistan, initiatives such as encouraging innovation and local manufacturing, increasing investment in medical research, enhancing medical education and training, implementing public health insurance, conducting awareness programs, and strengthening oversight mechanisms to curb corruption are crucial. International collaborations can also facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building. However, comprehensive reforms and sustained efforts are essential to overcome the entrenched challenges and achieve meaningful progress in Pakistan’s healthcare system.
