Chapter # 4 – Introduction to Geography
4.2.3 Name and Locate Neighboring Countries of Pakistan
Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a country in Southern Asia. It is the fifth-largest country in terms of population and has a diverse culture, influenced by its history as a crossroads for various civilizations.
Pakistan shares borders with four countries:
- India to the east.
- Afghanistan to the west
- Iran to the southwest.
- China to the northeast.
Each of these neighboring countries has its own unique characteristics and has played a significant role in shaping Pakistan’s history and culture.
India, Pakistan’s largest neighbor, shares a complex and often tense relationship with Pakistan. The two countries have fought several wars and have ongoing disputes over the Kashmir region. Despite these challenges, there is also significant cultural and economic exchange between the two countries.
Afghanistan, Pakistan’s western neighbor, has a long and shared history with Pakistan. The two countries have close cultural and linguistic ties, and many Afghans have sought refuge in Pakistan during times of conflict in Afghanistan. However, the relationship between the two countries has also been strained by issues such as cross-border terrorism and the flow of refugees.
Iran, Pakistan’s southwestern neighbor, has a relatively peaceful and cooperative relationship with Pakistan. The two countries have strong economic ties and cooperate on various regional issues.
China, Pakistan’s northeastern neighbor, has emerged as a close ally of Pakistan in recent years. The two countries have significant economic and military cooperation, and China has invested heavily in Pakistan’s infrastructure.
