Chapter # 3 – Emergence of Pakistan
3.1.3. State the Pakistan Resolution 1940
The Pakistan Resolution, also known as the Lahore Resolution, was passed on March 23, 1940, during the annual session of the All-India Muslim League in Lahore. The resolution called for the creation of independent states for Muslims in regions where they were the majority, acknowledging the distinct identity and rights of Muslims in India. It stated:
“That geographically contiguous units are demarcated into regions which should be constituted, with such territorial readjustments as may be necessary, that the areas in which the Muslims are numerically in a majority, as in the North-Western and Eastern Zones of India, should be grouped to constitute ‘independent states’ in which the constituent units shall be autonomous and sovereign.”
The resolution emphasized the need for Muslim-majority areas in India to have autonomy and sovereignty within their respective regions. It laid the foundation for the demand for a separate nation for Muslims, which eventually led to the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
