Landforms of Pakistan: Lifestyles and Economic Activities
Pakistan Studies E-Notes
Unit 4: Land and Climate of Pakistan
Subtopic 4.2: The Natural Topography
SLO 4.2.2: Compare different landforms of Pakistan with reference to its people’s lifestyles and economic activities
Introduction
Pakistan has a variety of landforms: mountains, plateaus, plains, deserts and coastal areas. They influence the lifestyles, occupations, housing, transport and economic activities of the people in different regions. For example, people in the fertile plains mainly practise agriculture, while those in mountainous regions often depend on livestock rearing, tourism and small-scale farming.
1. Mountains
Mountains of the north and north-west
The northern and north-western regions contain high ranges, including the Himalayas, Karakoram and Hindu Kush.
Lifestyle of the people
- People live in valleys and mountain settlements, often in houses built of stone, timber and other local materials.
- Cold winters influence clothing, housing, food and daily routines.
- Some communities move seasonally with their livestock to find grazing land.
Economic activities
- Terrace farming of maize, wheat, potatoes and fruit.
- Livestock rearing, including sheep, goats, cattle and, in suitable areas, yaks.
- Tourism, mountaineering and trekking.
- Trade, handicrafts and fruit production, particularly apples, apricots and cherries.
2. Plains
The Indus Plain
The Indus Plain covers much of the Punjab and Sindh. Its fertile alluvial soils and extensive irrigation system make it one of Pakistan’s most important agricultural regions.
Lifestyle of the people
- Many people live in large villages, towns and cities.
- Settlements are often well connected by roads and railways.
- Food, housing and occupations are influenced by agriculture and urban development.
Economic activities
- Cultivation of wheat, rice, cotton, sugarcane and other crops.
- Dairy farming and livestock rearing.
- Food processing, textile manufacturing and other industries.
- Trade, transport and services in major cities.
3. Plateaus
The Balochistan and Potohar plateaus
Important plateau regions include the Balochistan Plateau in the west and the Potohar Plateau in northern Punjab. These areas generally have uneven terrain, and many parts receive limited rainfall.
Lifestyle of the people
- Settlements are often scattered, particularly in dry and rugged areas.
- In Balochistan, some communities keep traditional pastoral lifestyles and move livestock in search of water and grazing.
- Access to water, roads and other services can be difficult in remote areas.
Economic activities
- Livestock rearing, especially sheep, goats and camels in suitable areas.
- Cultivation of wheat, barley and fruit where soil and water allow.
- Mining of coal, chromite and other minerals in different parts of Balochistan.
- Small-scale trade and services.
4. Deserts
Thar, Cholistan and Thal
Pakistan has several desert regions: the Thar Desert in Sindh, the Cholistan Desert in southern Punjab and the Thal Desert in the Punjab. They receive little rainfall and often have high temperatures.
Lifestyle of the people
- Many settlements are small and widely scattered because water is scarce.
- People adapt to hot, dry conditions through their clothing, housing and daily routines.
- In some communities people travel to obtain water, fodder and other essential supplies.
- Traditional crafts and cultural practices remain important in several desert communities.
Economic activities
- Livestock rearing, particularly goats, sheep, camels and cattle where conditions allow.
- Rain-fed farming where rainfall is sufficient.
- Handicrafts, embroidery, pottery and other cottage industries.
- Mining and energy production in certain areas, including coal mining in the Thar region.
5. Coastal areas
The Arabian Sea coast
The coastal belt lies along the Arabian Sea, mainly in Sindh and Balochistan. Karachi, Gwadar and other coastal settlements are important for fishing, maritime trade and port activities.
Lifestyle of the people
- Many coastal communities depend on the sea for food and employment.
- Fishing villages are often near beaches, creeks and harbours.
- People adapt to humid weather, coastal conditions and occasional storms.
- In large port cities, lifestyles are also shaped by industry, commerce and urban development.
Economic activities
- Fishing and seafood processing.
- Port operations and international trade through Karachi Port, Port Qasim and Gwadar Port.
- Ship-related services, transport and warehousing.
- Tourism and other coastal services in suitable locations.
Comparison
| Landform | Lifestyle of the people | Major economic activities |
|---|---|---|
| Mountains | Valley settlements, cold-weather clothing, seasonal livestock movement in some areas | Terrace farming, livestock rearing, tourism, fruit growing |
| Plains | Large villages and cities, better transport links in many areas | Agriculture, dairy farming, industries, trade |
| Plateaus | Scattered settlements in some regions, adaptation to rugged terrain and water shortages | Livestock rearing, mining, farming where possible |
| Deserts | Small settlements, adaptation to heat and scarce water | Livestock rearing, handicrafts, limited farming, mining in some areas |
| Coastal areas | Fishing communities and port-city populations | Fishing, shipping, port trade, seafood processing, tourism |
Conclusion
